Catania travel guide
Catania, Sicily is one of Italy's most popular tourist areas. It's the second-largest city in all of Sicily, and sits on the east coast of the island, near the Ionian Sea. Both Catania's location and history make for an exciting place for any traveler to visit.
Catania is located right by the famous Mount Etna, an active volcano. There've been several eruptions in the volcano's history, and each of them had a lasting effect on the region. One of the most devastating eruptions occurred in 1669, and almost completely destroyed Catania, causing a large portion of the city to need to be rebuilt.
While the many eruptions and invasions faced by the city led to many old buildings being destroyed, there's still plenty to see in the city. Anyone paying a visit to Catania should definitely check out the elephant fountain that is something of a mascot for the city. There also a number of historical buildings and special geological sites relating to the volcano to see. Check out our "What to See" page for more information on what to do while you're in Catania.
Since Catania has a regular stream of visitors, it's no surprise that they have plenty of options available for accommodation. There are a large number of hotels in the city itself, as well as other options such as hostels. To find out what options are available for accommodation, see the "Hotels" page. If you decide to go out into the countryside, there are also plenty of farm houses available to stay in. See the "Countryside" page for more information about staying in one of those.
You don't have to limit yourself to just Catania, Italy proper. There are several different places around Catania that are also interesting to visit, like Taormina, Giardini Naxos, Acireale, Cava Grande, Aci trezza, Aci Castello, PaternĂ², Piazza Armerina, Letojanni, and Fiumefreddo. Take a look at their individual pages to find out more about each of these places.
If you do decide to take your trip to Catania, there are a variety of ways that you can go about it. It's possible to get there by train, bus, car, plane, or ferry. See the "How to Get to Catania" page a more detailed guide on how to get there using each of these methods.
This site is intended to be a very thorough Catania travel guide, so take a look around, and hopefully you'll find what you're looking for.
